Back To Basic Homeschooling

Have you ever noticed how many things seem to come back around for a second time? Take clothing for instance. Our kids are wearing some of the same things that we did years ago. Songs that we sung on the radio are still playing and even being re-recorded by new artists. It's probably a natural thing for people to move forward and hang on to new stuff that's better. But it's just as normal to throw out stuff that doesn't work and go back to things that worked just fine before.

Many families are going back to more traditional home environments. More and more women are choosing to stay at home and raise their own children once again. Many of these women (some men as well), are also opting to homeschool their children.

The DIY or Do It Yourself market has been a huge new trend. But think about it. Is it really new? Isn't that the way it used to be in the 'olden' days? Everyone pretty much did everything themselves. This is what I'm talking about. People are starting to do more of their own cooking, sewing, knitting, carpentry, crafts and gardening.

This offers a perfect opportunity to integrate this into your homeschooling program. Education used to be the basic Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Beyond that, children learned home and life skills. Although life is a lot more complex today, the principal can be the same. Teach your children many home and life skills along with their curriculum.

Instead of just cooking meals, take your children and teach them step by step how to cook that meal. Teach about appliances, ingredients, and different types of foods. Use the opportunity as a learning and bonding experience.

You can do the exact same thing with any other task or hobby. Do more than just let them observe. Actually explain what is going on, and then get them doing it themselves. Children love to accomplish. Let them plant their own garden, cook a meal and take part in a renovation project. Their beaming faces are pleasure for the moment, but the skills will stay with them for a lifetime.

Many stay at home parents are combining hobbies with business to make up for some of the finances that are lost by not working a job. This is also an important life skill to teach your children. Once you know how to make extra money from home, they will be able to mentor from you. Business and financial skills are extremely important today.

Going back to the simple things of home and family is still possible in a modern world. Just keep the modern things that are good, but hold on to the 'old fashioned' things that are good as well. Homeschooling can fit into that lifestyle perfectly if you want it to.
